EZURiO latest white paper explains the need for platforms in M2M
26/02/2008
M2M is widely seen as the next growth area in technology, providing remote monitoring solutions for many sectors of society. It is the backbone behind eHealth and telecare, it supports a raft of telematics applications, from fleet management to road tolling, it enables energy management and conservation with automated meter reading and HVAC control, as well as serving the traditional machine monitoring and control applications that bring efficiency to industrial production. Despite that potential, embedded engineers and software developers still approach most M2M projects with a “not invented here” approach, redesigning hardware and writing middleware afresh for each new application. This is a major stumbling block if the industry is to evolve from the current deployments of hundreds of devices to the anticipated requirement of hundreds of millions. This timely White Paper from EZURiO explains the need to work with standardised platforms that are optimised for M2M applications. Once these are put in place, then companies can concentrate on the real value of vertical applications and usability, rather than constantly reinventing the wheel. “The industry has an obvious appreciation of the explosive potential within M2M”, said Nick Hunn, CTO of EZURiO and author of the White Paper, “but the standard response is posturing rather than pragmatism. Unless we have the latter, which means accepting the platform concept, we are never going to move away from the current low levels of implementation. Raising this awareness in the embedded community is vital, as at the moment they are M2M’s own worst enemy.” EZURiO is backing the concept of underlying platforms with their M2M oriented embedded scripting language – UWScript, and their end-to-end WiTS telematics platform. These are being accepted as the fastest and most cost-effective route to market for a wide range of M2M applications.
The White Paper can be downloaded from EZURiO's website. EZURiO’s product range can be seen at the Embedded Show on their partners' stands – Codico in Hall 12, Stand 222 and SascoHolz in Hall 9, stand 457.
